Matrimony

Matrimony

The Catholic sacrament of Matrimony (Marriage) is a sacred covenant between a baptized man and woman that signifies the lifelong union of Christ and the Church. It is a divine covenant marked by mutual consent and the will to fully give themselves to one another in faithful, permanent, and fruitful love. Through this sacrament, spouses receive the grace to love each other with Christ’s love, strengthening their unity and sanctifying their life together.

Matrimony is more than a contract; it is a covenantal bond that mirrors God's unbreakable covenant with His people. This sacrament establishes a permanent, exclusive union ordered to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children. It also reflects the communion of the Holy Trinity and serves as the foundation of the domestic Church - the family - which is fundamental for both the Church and society.

In the Catholic Church, marriage is celebrated liturgically, ideally during a Mass, and requires preparation, including marriage preparation classes. The Church holds that this union is indissoluble, based on Christ’s teaching, "What God has joined together, let no man put asunder" (Mark 10:9). The grace given by the sacrament empowers the couple to live out their vocation with faithfulness and love throughout their married life.
