Anointing of the Sick

Anointing of the Sick

The Catholic sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a special grace given to baptized Catholics who are experiencing serious illness, facing surgery, or are elderly and in danger due to age. It is intended to provide spiritual strength, peace, and courage to endure suffering in a Christian manner, reconcile the person with God by forgiving sins if confession is not possible, and, if it is God’s will, aid in physical healing. This sacrament is not only for those at the point of death but can be received any time a Catholic begins to be seriously ill or in danger because of old age. It may be received multiple times if the illness worsens or if new serious health issues arise.

Nursing Home and Homebound Catholics

For Catholic nursing home residents and homebound individuals wishing to receive weekly Communion, the Church provides a special ministry to bring the Eucharist to those who cannot attend Mass physically. This ministry is typically carried out by trained Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) who are commissioned to visit the sick, elderly, or homebound parishioners.

If you or a loved one are homebound or reside in a nursing home and would like to receive Holy Communion, please contact the Parish Office at (770) 461-0492.

A sacramental emergency in the Catholic Church refers to a situation where a person is in imminent danger of death or seriously ill and urgently requires the reception of the sacraments, especially the Anointing of the Sick, Confession, or Holy Communion (Viaticum). This emergency calls for immediate pastoral care to provide spiritual strength, forgiveness of sins, and preparation for passing into eternal life.
