Confirmation

Confirmation

The Catholic sacrament of Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments and one of the three sacraments of Christian initiation, along with Baptism and the Eucharist. It involves a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit, which strengthens and deepens the grace received at Baptism. Through Confirmation, a baptized person is sealed with the Holy Spirit and is given spiritual gifts such as wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. This sacrament unites the person more closely to Christ and the Church and strengthens them to live out and defend their faith boldly.

The rite typically includes the bishop anointing the confirmand's forehead with chrism (holy oil), laying on of hands, and the words, "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit." It signifies the confirmed person's full initiation into the Catholic Church and their commitment to continue their faith journey with maturity and witness.

Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation

To prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, students are expected to have completed one full year of religious education in a Catholic school or three full years in a parish faith formation program prior to the year in which they will receive the Sacrament. Typically, this preparation occurs in 10th grade within the Archdiocese of Atlanta.

In order to receive Confirmation, candidates must provide a copy of their Baptismal certificate and proof of having received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion.
